“MUSIC IS MY ART”
Amy Winehouse “Valerie”
As a child, I always loved music, but I was never brave enough to pursue it professionally. That is until I was a Senior in High School and I decided to record myself singing Valerie by Amy Winehouse. This song was the first cover that I ever performed and it was the beginning of my journey as a singer. Being able to sing and create music has made me grow more confidence in myself as well as demonstrated a fluid identity throughout my lifespan. As I identify as a singer, my music will be forever changing and developing as with the the experiences and identities that I create through my singing.
Hannah Buller “Feelin’ Rosey”
Feelin’ Rosey is my second single that I have ever released, and it has a more alternative “Halsey” vibe compared to my first song. The lyrics demonstrate a specific mindset of creating a so-called “alter ego” in order to get through certain pains in life. The song is my interpretation of “faking it, till your making it” and using those negative situations to create positivity in your life. My social implications in life have made me stronger as a person, those implications being my parents divorce, my struggles with mental health, and my body image issues. The song is also a reflection of myself through the concept called insecure high self-esteem, which according to the Introduction toward an integrative view of identity says that I am more affected by incoming feedback and my self-esteem fluctuates.
Hannah Buller “Wonderland With You”
My first song that I ever created is more of an EDM pop genre and was for the purpose of something fun to listen and dance to. At this point in my life, I don’t think that I truly knew who I was yet, and I wasn’t ready to create a song that had more of a deep meaning about my life. I was also still trying to discover my sound and what I liked in my own music. To be honest, I am still trying to do this today. In every moment of my life, my identity is either changing or developing. According to Introduction toward an integrative view of identity, aspects of identity have been shown to change in salience from moment to moment.
Bob Dylan “Make you feel my Love”
Another classic song, “Make you feel my love” was one of the first songs that I ever recorded myself singing and posted to my Instagram. Being able to share my abilities through social media, developed me into the artist that I am today. I was always too scared and shy to perform in front of a live audience, so being able to record myself and post it to an online community made it easier to gain confidence in my voice. According to Introducing Identity by David Buckingham, “advocates of technology have extrolled it’s value for encouraging creativity, increasing motivation and achievement, and for promoting demanding new styles of thinking.”
Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper “Shallow”
On the more recent side of my musical career, the newer cover that I have posted on my social media platforms was “Shallow” from the new movie A Star is Born. The difference between my first cover and my newer cover shows an immense development in my singing abilities. Being able to be creative and show an audience my abilities as a person has led me to my own discovery and actualization of my potential. I wouldn’t say that I see my future as a professional singer, but I always want music in my life, which is why I am pursuing a career on the business side of the industry. My music has taught me that I have the potential to use music as a therapy and an outlet to the negativity that may come my way.
